Everton boss Roberto Martinez slams decision to allow goal in League Cup loss

first_imgRoberto Martinez has described the refereeing error in the League Cup defeat at Man City as ‘heart-breaking’.Everton were knocked out of the competition, – missing the chance of a Wembley final with local rivals Liverpool – as they were beaten over two legs in the semi-final against Manuel Pellegrini’s City. The Sky Blues came from behind in the tie, and also on the night, and the second goal proved to be both crucial and controversial.Raheem Sterling ran with the ball to the byline and it appeared to go out of play before he crossed to Kevin De Bruyne, who finished well.City, buoyed by the goal, went on to score again and book their place in next month’s final as Sergio Aguero headed past Joel Robles.Toffees boss Martinez said of the game-changing moment: “Everyone who has seen the replay can see clearly that the ball is out of play.“That’s heart-breaking in a second leg semi-final [which] was two teams with incredible character.“I thought the tie was a really good football game and you don’t expect to get a goal conceded in that manor. The players in the dressing room, as you can imagine, cannot put it in words. It is wrong and very, very hard to take.“You accept Man City are a very good side and if they score three goals in the right way, you would expect it. The first goal we conceded is a deflected shot and it happens. The luck can be with or against you.“But the second is a goal that shouldn’t have been given right and clearly put us out of the tie, it’s a very significant moment and overall it’s a heart-breaking moment.”Martinez has been criticised by the Merseysiders’ fans in recent weeks as they have conceded a considerable amount of goals, are 12th in the Premier League  and have won just one of their last ten league games. The 42-year-old added: “Overall we should take it as an inspiration because we are a young, very good group of players.“We are showing signs of a very strong team who have seen eye-to-eye against a strong Man City side to finish this season really strong and get the rewards I feel everyone deserves.”CLICK HERE – ‘Get Jose Mourinho in – he wants to prove he’s a great manager!’ – A large amount of Everton fans want Roberto Martinez outlast_img
