Carpenter Apologizes For Remarks Made In Email

first_imgClick the bar below to listen to the full hour of SoundOff:Photo provided by: AP News Carpenter: “On Friday, we received notification that when we returned to the capital (on Monday) that we would have some process that we would have to go through to gain access to the building. The process included being screened and it also meant having to wear a sticker in the building. I took the sticker thing kind of personally, and it was something that I did not think was appropriate.”  Representative Carpenter: “I used an analogy of the Star of David being used to identify Jews in Nazi, Germany. I used that as an analogy to discuss government overreach, and that went over like a lead balloon. If I had the opportunity to do it over again I would have chosen a different analogy, while we still need to discuss government overreach, the analogy I used detracted from the substance of the argument. I apologize for any offense that created, it was not my intent to offend.” FacebookTwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享Nikiski Representative Ben Carpenter apologized for remarks he made in an email on Friday to fellow lawmakers comparing the Nazi treatment of Jews to public health screenings in place at the State Capitol. The apology was made during SoundOff on KSRM 920AM during the 10am hour on Monday. In the email thread to lawmakers, Carpenter asked whether stickers that individuals may be asked to wear as part of a Capitol Coronavirus screening process will be “available as a yellow Star of David.” He says he was responding to proposed protocols aimed at guarding against the virus as lawmakers prepared to reconvene on Monday. He says he was making a point about loss of liberties.last_img read more

UAB Blazers looking forward to rematch with UCLA Bruins

first_imgLOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — UAB junior guard Robert Brown is one those people happy to see UCLA win in the NCAA Tournament, no matter how they advanced.A questionable goaltending call on Bryce Alford’s 3-pointer gave the Bruins a victory and the 14th-seeded Blazers a chance to measure how much they’ve grown this season. The teams play Saturday in a rematch of a UCLA’s 88-76 win in the Bahamas in November with the stakes much higher than that game for seventh-place in the Battle 4 Atlantis. This time, the winner heads to Houston for the South Regional semifinal.“We do have a little payback for them, and we want to play them,” Brown said Friday.Well, the Bruins are looking forward to what will be only the fifth NCAA game between 11 and 14 seeds — 11 seeds are 4-0 in those games. They took notice of UAB’s 60-59 upset of No. 3 seed Iowa State.“We know they’re a great team,” UCLA senior Norman Powell said. “We know we’re a great team. So it’s going to be fun to play them again.”The growing pains have been similar for UCLA and UAB.UCLA was struggling at 8-7 in early January with Powell the only senior starting. The Bruins’ spot in this tournament was doubted by many, and adding a goaltending call dissected across the Internet has only focused more attention on UCLA with the Bruins (21-13) now a game away from a second straight Sweet 16 berth.“This team has dealt with a lot of adversity, a lot of criticism for the games we’ve played in,” Powell said. “Something we’ve all done is believed in one another, believed the team … We know what we can do, and we’ve just got to go out there and perform.”The Blazers came into this season with the third-youngest team in Division I with a combined seven years of experience. Until the tournament’s first big upset, UAB was best known for shutting down its football program in December. In the Bahamas, coach Jerod Haase had freshmen and sophomores facing UCLA in their third game in as many days against ranked teams. Being without 6-foot-9 freshman William Lee as he recovered from an injury didn’t help. It was part of a 4-9 start for the Blazers that forced Haase to order some players not to shoot and do what the coaches told them going into Conference USA play. Now the Blazers (20-15) are very confident themselves wanting their program’s fourth Sweet 16 berth and first since 2004.“It’s night and day,” Haase said.___Some things to watch for on Saturday:ALFORD FROM 3: The coach’s son and sophomore guard was 9 of 11 outside the arc in the Bruins’ opening win. Alford now has the UCLA single-season record with 88 made 3-pointers topping Arron Afflalo’s mark of 87 in 2007. UCLA coach Steve Alford says he never hit more than eight 3s in a game. “The dad in me says you made eight son because the ninth one never did go in the basket,” the UCLA coach said. “You get credit for it. The coach in me says, ‘OK, I’ll give you credit because without that ninth one, we wouldn’t have advanced.”DEFENDING BRYCE ALFORD: The Blazers have noticed how the Bruins screen to free Alford up to shoot. UAB guard Denzell Watts said they want to keep Alford from getting comfortable. The Blazers are holding opponents to 32.2 percent shooting outside the arc.DOUBLE-DIGIT SEEDS: The Bruins’ win over SMU was their first as a double-digit seed in this tournament, but it was only their second game with such a seed. Now they must try to avoid becoming the first 11 seed to lose to a 14. According to STATS, the winning 11s include Minnesota over Siena in 1989, Connecticut against Xavier in 1991, Washington over Richmond in 1998 and Tennessee big over Mercer last year.HIT THE BOARDS: UAB dominated Iowa State on the boards with a 52-37 edge. UCLA’s pretty good on the glass too after leading the Pac-12 grabbing 38 rebounds per game. Kevon Looney ranks third nationally averaging 9.2 rebounds a game.last_img read more

Ray faces huge task ahead of Digicel Cup

first_imgRúgby League Giru Ltd Waghi Tumbe head coach Francis Ray has a huge task ahead of him in this year’s Digicel Cup campaign. Ray will be putting himself to test in the opening match of the Digicel Cup against the National Capital District Commission Vipers at the National Football Stadium on Sunday. Most of the players in the team were selected from the Jiwaka Governor’s Cup and will be making their debut while a few players have experience in the semi-professional competition. In an interview with the Post-Courier at the Tumbe’s training at Ogelbeng outside Mt Hagen City early this week that despite the late preparations of the team, they are ready to face the Vipers in Port Moresby. He said they started to mould themselves up after two trial games against PRK Mendi Muruks in Mendi and Enga Provincial Government Enga Mioks in Mt Hagen. Two former players Billy Noi Jr and Simon Young are in the camp to help boost the morale of the team. Ray said the two trial games against Enga Mioks and Mendi Muruks saw his side lose to the Muruks 16-14 and drew with Mioks 12-all. The results gave him a lot of confidence and an indication of the current level of the team so he could work and improve on their weaknesses, and build on their combinations and kicking. Ray has represented PNG as a Kumul for six years and 15 years participating in the Digicel Cup challenge. He has coached a team participating in the Western Highlands Governor’s Cup and the Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup. “Now I am wearing another cap for the team management. I am confident that my players will give me the result for the management, the sponsor and the people of Jiwaka and Western Highlands as a whole,” Ray said.last_img read more

NCD volleyball given green light to run competition

first_imgVolleyball BY KILA NAO The National Capital District Volleyball Association (NCDVA) has been given approval by the PNG Sports Foundation Pandemic Management Committee to resume its competition and training programs at the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre. A relieved NCDVA president Edward Aisi (pictured) said they are happy to have the competition resume after a while. “The association will be strictly implementing a number of protocols to help lower the risk of Covid-19 exposure and reduce the spread during competition and practices. “We will keep in place safety measures strictly during competition by way of maintaining social distancing by keeping players and coaches. “We will consider dropping down and limiting participation to within-team practice only between members of the same team. “We will be assessing the way training and games are played, the way equipment is shared among players while considering physical closeness of players, and the length of time that players are close to each other,” Aisi said. The TAIC venue manager Gus Taunao will be on hand to ensure the running of the competition stay within the limited capacity of the stadium to observe social distancing and adhere to Covid-19 hygiene measures. “We expect to resume the season this coming Saturday till October and all existing clubs have confirmed returning to the fold. “We have also planned to stage the Super League challenge that will include other Port Moresby based associations to participate in the U21 and Open divisions (men and women) respectively. “The tournament will be played every Saturday and will run for least two to three months to test the players’ skill development level. “This is also good lead up for players in each association towards the National volleyball championships in November,” said Aisi. The associations that have confirmed to participate include Kauka, Taikone, Tatana, Manubada and NCDVA while an open invite has been extended to other associations to participate to promote the code.last_img read more

Imo ads on jerseys can only work in one sport: soccer.  That’s because most of the time there are no front numbers and the team logo/wordmark is small and in a corner (that dates back to waay before ads first appeared on soccer kits).  And even in soccer, it only looks good if there’s one ad on the jersey.  Leagues where they allow the teams to have 2, 3, 4, etc. ads on the jersey look horrible.
